A memoir—I have felt my life is a series of scenes in a 1930s black-and-white silent film. Where the guy is not paying attention and walks off the top of the building, only to step onto a girder being carried by a crane. When I was young, I thought it was blind luck. When I did start paying attention to the details I discovered that the seemingly coincidental events were signposts along the path; taking me where I needed to be, not where I thought I should be. Just as how the most stupid thing I ever did—mounting a horse with an attitude problem one morning in Mexico, and then getting thrown from said horse—ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me.
But it took twenty years of debilitating pain for me to find that nugget of truth.
I chased the moments in between the signposts. The instances where I knew, I was in exactly the right place at the right time. They felt almost magical—perfect moments. They were fun and made me feel alive. You know, those crystal-clear instances when time downshifts into slow motion, and all of your senses become hyper-acute. When thinking comes to a standstill and colors become more vibrant. Sounds fine-tune to a pin drop, leaving me feeling comfortable inside my skin and one with life.
These happen in those few seconds when conscious awareness aligns with the moment, in the tiny spaces between thoughts when words just don't work. We all experience such moments, even if we don’t notice, some while scaling a mountain or making music, others, watching the sunset or a child’s face grinning with delight. They are as diverse as we are, revealing themselves uniquely to each of us. They leave us wondering What just happened? What exactly was that?
My perfect moments happened consistently while skiing, surfing and being in nature. I followed the signposts, sometimes knowingly and occasionally without a clue, from the beaches of Southern California to the jungles of Venezuela and the back country of India and Thailand before ending up in the Himalayas. It was there that the how and why of those perfect moments became self-evident.
When I stepped into the Buddhist Kingdom of Ladakh, in the Himalayas of India, it marked the beginning of the end of a far longer journey along the path, one whose origin was not months, but eons and countless lifetimes back. It became apparent to me that to live and feel life in its entirety I must first be willing to feel it fully in the present moment. To do that, I had to heal myself of emotional hurts suffered not only in this lifetime but from other lifetimes as well. The burden was on me to clean up my past and be accountable for my actions. In this lifetime, as well as others, lost loves called for reuniting, shattered relationships needed mending, wounds wanting to heal, and broken promises demanded honoring. Simply put, I had unfinished business to tend to.
While what you read may seem like fiction, it’s a genuine tale. It’s my story, but it's not about me. It’s about universal and timeless lessons, learned through experience, our greatest teacher. By living through them, we uncover the gems of wisdom scattered like diamonds along the path—the insights that transform our lives. It’s about remembering who we are through our humanity and learning that things may appear one way on the surface, but be different underneath. It’s about things that were never part of the American Dream of the 1960s when grew up.
When the signposts led me back to sea level on the island of Bali, I secretly hoped the experiences initiated during those cracks in my perceptions would end, so that I could blame this whole series of thoughts and feelings on the altitude.
They didn't and I couldn't, and I realized the story had to be told.
It is my hope that when you read my tale, it will help you remember some forgotten feelings concerning your true nature, and perhaps inspire a long overdue revisit. So, I invite you to come along and enjoy a story about what’s possible.

This is a powerful, engaging, thought-provoking autobiographical account of one man's journey of self-discovery and self-realization. Many will find some of what unfolds "unbelievable". Such skeptics would benefit immensely from a suspension of disbelief. As the author discovers, it is only by opening one's mind that new possibilities unfold and an understanding becomes available that what appears on the surface of our everyday lives is a thin, superficial layer which only hints at, sometimes even contradicts, what is really going on. As Western cosmology and modern physics converges on what we in the West call Eastern mysticism, the entire range of possibilities for human participation in the infinite fabric of existence becomes comprehensible. If there ever was a time in human history when this was needed, it is now. Ignoring our own place in the great karmic unfolding is a sure path to the confusion and self-destructive obsessions which have turned our world into the frightening mess it is in. We each have the choice and responsibility to understand all we can about ourselves and the world which hosts our individual journeys. This wonderful book is an excellent place to start.

This is a remarkable story of one man’s uncovering of authentic living. The book is a candid memoir, full of incredible events, exotic places, colorful characters and stunning photography. But what’s more compelling is the timeless wisdom the author eloquently elucidates.

In a very hands-on way, this frank, honest memoir shows how difficult events and circumstances of physical and mental discomfort are invitations to feel within completely and unconditionally rather than follow the widespread, unconscious, ‘normal’ method of escaping and numbing through obsessive mental activity, ‘pharmaceuticalling’, addictive behaviors and rearranging the “outer” world, or as the author puts it, “living life around the edges, using short-term fixes to smooth over” pain. By doing the latter, we never address the causal emotional element of suffering but instead mistake the effects for the cause and mistakenly believe that addressing those effects will somehow affect the cause. It’s quite insane, really and the author posits “No wonder chronic disease is so prevalent in the world. The sickness is often the final stages of unexpressed feelings trapped within the body.”

Collins' holistic practice helps people to face the origin and various parts of the book are devoted to his journey of emotional release, as well as those of others.

One insight I loved from the book is how personal relationships have the potential to provide a deeply meaningful spiritual practice. Of course, any experience can, but relationships have the ability to unceremoniously cut one down and expose the hidden but causative emotional vibrations we’ve been escaping from for years . . . with all the turmoil and chaos that has implied to our experience.

The book is beautifully wrapped in Buddhist references and mysticism, but these can be taken as a choice of curtain color for an unveiling of a message that is universal to humanity

“Our disconnection from ourselves is a result of our past choices, experiences, and emotions that are often too uncomfortable to allow to surface in our awareness. When we sweep those painful moments under the rug of denial, we desecrate our truest nature and forget who we are.”

The invitation is to feel every moment without condition.

The cliché “living in the now” has become all the rage, but I suspect few people really truly understand it, its implications, or have the honesty and earnestness to live it. The author puts it beautifully “Living requires feeling each moment, in real time. Being in the now—and feeling—are one in the same. You can’t have one without the other.”

Well worth reading.
Many of us travel though life seeking answers and validation for our life choices from other people, caught in a web of thinking others have better lives and answers to our troubles. Many are tempted to self-medicate in various ways to avoid physical and emotional pain, often leaving them emotionally stuck in a vicious cycle of turmoil. I have a soft spot and the highest respect for anyone who takes responsibility for their actions and seeks to find answers from within.

This is an adventure that involves an outer journey to the Himalayas, that initiates an inner exploration within the depths of emotional and physical pain into healing. The trip was a catalyst to begin a new life. All life journeys and lessons are unique to each individual. That is why truth is often stranger and more interesting than fiction. Where most of us do everything we can to avoid emotional pain, Lance took a deep dive into his and grew from these experiences. He found himself and a renewed sense of purpose and understanding of his life. The book moves between his journey through the Himalayas with various places and people along the way, and weaves a story with his past life experiences and past lives, into the present. He moves away from the need to self-medicate to a place of profound awareness.

Lance also displays a gift to see into the spirit world along with some of his past lives. Most of us will never see the kinds of spirit beings he has seen and interacted with. This is his journey. It may just inspire you to listen a little more closely to your own inner voice. However, if you were to think all is said in the first volume, you would be wrong. Volume II is out there with the rest of the story.
